ABOUT THE COACH

Iain Somerside

I have been involved in coaching for over 35 years and during that time have coached many different types of athlete and mentored a variety of coaches. I have been fortunate enough to learn from some of the best coaches in the world and every day I aim to grow my understanding and knowledge of boat moving. When we stop learning that is when we should stop coaching.

For the last 12 years I have run a performance rowing programme where 25% of our participants become internationalists, and the programme has produced three World Champions.

I was generously awarded the Sportscotland Performance Coach of the Year in 2016 and was Scottish Rowing Performance Coach of the Year in 2016

In 2007 I was awarded the FISA “ Medaille D Honeur “ for services to World Rowing

I have been honoured to play a small part in helping develop hundreds of young people and been able to show them the opportunities that can be provided by this wonderful sport.

ROWING TECHNIQUE

Rowing technique is simple. It is not gymnastics or golf. It is a small range of movements that are precise and must be performed correctly and then, at a performance level, delivered under extreme physical and mental pressure.

TRC will show you how to develop the correct technique for either sculling or sweep rowing. He will give you exercises and techniques that are appropriate to develop your skills and correct any faults that you may have. You will be provided with video feedback of what you are doing to give you better understanding of what you need to improve.

The programme has a range of presentations and materials that help you understand good technique and how to make it happen.
